The Why
As Founder of M&L Mentor LLC, I am often asked the same question: “What was your inspiration for starting the company?” There is no singular answer to that question. It is a culmination of a few things, mostly revolving around my own personal and professional experiences. Ultimately, I want to make an impact on people’s lives by improving the working experience for leaders and those they lead.
In my professional experience, I have had the privilege of working for some great leaders. From the US Navy to sales leaders. I have also had the privilege to work under some not so great examples. I say it was a privilege because of a powerful perspective I learned in the Navy. You learn more from bad leaders than you do good ones, if you are willing to learn. Leadership has always been of the utmost importance to me in any workplace, and so I have spent a great deal of time learning from both examples.
In part, my inspiration for starting the company has been to leverage my experience and perspective, having seen great examples of both good and poor leadership, to help others lead effectively, strategically, and with purpose. I have felt the difference in quality of life and performance as an employee and as a manager myself when positive leadership is practiced within a team and an organization compared to when it is not.
I have experience in multiple industries and have seen that every industry, and specific organization I have worked for, seems to struggle with the same root problems. Culture, engagement, and operational efficiency and effectiveness are key characteristics I have seen to varying degrees throughout my professional life. All of which have the potential to deteriorate relationships between leaders and their people or strengthen them. The relationship between leaders and the led is hands down the greatest influence on the success of a team or organization as a whole.
I have seen both strong relationships and strained relationships as a leader and a subordinate alike. These contrasts in my professional experience have offered me perspective. It is this perspective that has allowed me to learn a great deal about how to lead, and how to follow.
From a more personal motivation, I learned the hard way that your boss has a greater influence on your wellbeing than your doctor does. I have experienced first hand the difference in my personal wellbeing, and that of my colleagues, between a great boss and one that seems to care very little about their employees. As someone who has struggled with mental health I strive to improve this relationship not just for the positive affects on performance, but the positive affects on the quality of life of both leaders and the led.
On a more individual level, I have seen how personal development and personal management skills can improve overall balance and quality of life, leading to more fulfilling use of personal resources such as time and effort. Helping people find their way out of the same rut I found myself in, and show them how to reach their greatest potential for their sake has become one of the most fulfilling experiences I have had personally or professionally.
The Vision
In a perfect world, employees would manage themselves and leaders could focus on leading their teams instead of micromanaging. In theory, organizations could flatten their structures effectively decreasing the number of levels between top executives and front line employees, because the excessive oversight and management would be unnecessary. We don’t live in a perfect world, but we can come close. Through great leadership and culture based on mutual trust, respect, understanding, and accountability for all, and with full engagement throughout the organization, we can get pretty damn close to perfect.
The Stance
As mentioned several times throughout the site, M&L Mentor LLC believes in leadership through mutual trust, respect, and understanding. At the end of the day, your organization won’t reach its greatest potential if your people don’t feel they can trust you or that you respect them. And leaders can’t effectively lead unless they can trust their people and their people respect them. You don’t get mutual trust or respect without mutual understanding between both parties.
It takes accountability, discipline, and a genuine care to do right by others. It takes an open mind and a willingness to grow. In a lot of ways, the creation of this company is the result of a relentless pursuit of knowledge and wisdom for self-improvement, but also with the desire to find a better way to conduct the relationship between leaders and the led. That is the reason for choosing the owl to represent the company. It represents our stance for the relentless pursuit of wisdom, and a desire to share it.

Outside of my career aspirations I am involved in music. Music has always been a big part of my life. I play multiple instruments and still write and perform music with my band made up of some of my closest friends. I also fix guitars and other gear and offer music lessons for beginners. It’s great to watch the growth of my students on their musical journeys.
Above all, I am a proud father of two boys. A lot of my inspiration for what I do comes from them. They are the reason I started my self-improvement journey and why I continue to push forward. My greatest goal is to set a great example for them and help them reach their greatest potential in life.
